Washington: US President Donald Trump had once again adopted a very tough stance towards Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a public statement he claimed that Iran now wants change and Khamenei's decades-old rule is in its last stages. Trump even said that the country needs new leadership and the current system has only given fear and instability to ordinary Iranians.
Trump said that Khamenei's regime has pushed Iran back instead of moving it forward. According to him, the economic condition of the country has deteriorated in the last several years, unemployment among the youth has increased and Iran has become more isolated at the international level. Trump alleged that decisions are taken in closed rooms and the voice of common people is continuously suppressed.
In his statement, Trump referred to executions and political repression in Iran and said that strictness has been made a weapon of governance there. He claimed that there are thousands of families who have either lost their loved ones in jails or are living under the shadow of fear. According to Trump, the strength of a country is not built on fear but on the trust of the people.
Trump said that Iran is a country rich in natural resources, but wrong policies have put it in trouble. He alleged that a large part of the government is being spent on military and security infrastructure, while common citizens are struggling with inflation and lack of employment. In his words, “This could have been a country that would have been an example for the entire region, but it was thrown into the politics of confrontation.”
Political analysts believe that this statement of Trump is a message for both domestic and international forums. Amidst the electoral environment in America and the changing politics of the Middle East, this kind of language shows that Trump wants to further intensify the policy of pressure on Iran. However, experts also believe that such rhetoric can further increase tension.
There was no immediate official reaction from Iran after Trump's statement, but in the past also Tehran has described such statements as "American interference". Experts say that if this war of words continues, the hopes of softening the relations between the two countries may further weaken. At present it is clear that Trump has once again intensified the international debate regarding Iran's politics.
